JES Mail/Calendaring Service - Advantages

Advantages of moving to JES mail and calendar

Email Service

  • Quota:
    • faculty, staff, graduate student: 1024MB, i.e., 1GB
    • undergraduate student: 256MB
  • Receive email securely with any industry standard email reader (via pop.fsu.edu, imap.fsu.edu, for POP, or IMAP, respectively)
  • Send-email securely from any place in world (via smtp.fsu.edu — SMTP-auth, with TLS)
  • All system/service components are engineered and configured to withstand hardware failures (we can lose any individual component and continuing running)
  • Advanced mail filtering that users can configure for themselves — e.g., route all your importantannouncements@fsu.edu email to a specific subfolder automatically, if you wish; it is up to you
  • Commercial-grade anti-spam and anti-virus via cluster of mailscanners running Proofpoint (for both the mail you receive, and the mail you send)
  • Recovery capability for individual mailboxes (in case of accidental loss of messages)
  • Single-sign-on and integration with FSUID identity management utilities

Calendar Service

  • Arbitrary number of calendars per individual, at behest of individual account owner
  • Fine-grained access controls to share, delegate, restrict calendar viewing and manipulation
  • Calendar aggregration features (rollup multiple distinct calendars into a collected presentation of events)
  • Native support for calendar clients that support standard protocols (iCal, Thunderbird+Lightning, Sunbird, etc., via iCal, WCAP)
  • Support for Outlook client via install of Outlook Connector (via MAPI)
  • Upcoming releases enhance mobile device support and additional standards
  • Import/export calendar files
  • Task management functions
  • Free/busy scheduling, both by individual invite and by calendar entity (e.g., there might be a calendar for a conference room or some other non-person entity that could be scheduled via invite; or a group of individuals might be represented by a calendar)

Miscellaneous Attributes

  • Fully featured addressbook/contacts, including personal contacts and global contact list
  • Monitored 24/7/365 by centralized operations staff
  • Managed and funded by centralized IT unit
  • Delegated user management via FSUID utilities for departmental support staff
  • Support for “vanity” domains in the .fsu.edu namespace: e.g., jmbarker@coe.fsu.edu, jmbarker@law.fsu.edu, jmbarker@sc.fsu.edu

And there is no cost to departments.
